Memories of a bygone era

5c9822bb82c341I still recall those days in Dubai in the late 1980s and early and mid-90s, when Jamil saab would encourage reporters to get out and work on interesting stories. He would be seated on the news desk and would be alert to what happened across the globe. Mild and pleasant, he would also come out with witty ripostes.
And on Eid and other occasions it was a pleasure to join his family at his home for long lunch sessions. Convivial and pleasant, he would cheer you up during critical times, even when wars were raging in the region and one had to meet tough late night deadlines.
Having Jamil Akhtar on the desk at night always had a calming effect on all of us even during the most critical times. RIP Jamil saab. Will miss you.
